Short answer: Background noise hurts dictation less than distance does. Halving the gap between your mouth and the microphone roughly quadruples your voice level relative to the room. Get within a foot of the mic, avoid other people's speech, and most noise problems disappear without buying anything.
Dictation that works beautifully at a quiet desk can fall apart in a cafe, an open-plan office, a kitchen with a dishwasher running, or a car at highway speed. The text comes back with dropped words, wrong words, or occasionally a sentence that has nothing to do with what you said. The usual reaction is to conclude that dictation just does not work in noisy places and go back to typing.
That conclusion is mostly wrong, and it is wrong in an expensive way, because the fix is usually free. Noise is real, but the thing people call a noise problem is often a distance problem, a microphone-routing problem, or a specific-kind-of-noise problem. Each has a different fix, and only one of them involves spending money.

What background noise actually does
Speech recognition works on the audio it is given. It cannot know which parts of that audio you meant and which parts were the espresso machine. What it can do is model speech very well, which means it is surprisingly good at ignoring sounds that do not resemble speech and surprisingly bad at ignoring sounds that do.
That single distinction explains most of what you experience:
- Steady, broad-spectrum noise (air conditioning, road noise, a fan, rain, a refrigerator hum) is the easiest case. It is constant and unlike speech, so it mostly costs you a bit of accuracy at the edges of words.
- Intermittent sharp noise (a door slamming, dishes, a keyboard, a dog barking) tends to damage one or two words and leave the rest intact. Annoying, recoverable.
- Other people's speech is the hard case, and it is categorically harder than everything else. It is speech. It has the exact statistical shape the system is looking for. A conversation two tables over can put entire phrases into your text that you never said.
This is why a cafe with loud music can be a better dictation environment than a quiet office where two colleagues are talking near your desk. It is not about how many decibels the room has. It is about how much of that energy looks like language.
Understanding this changes what you optimize for. You are not trying to make the room quiet. You are trying to make your own voice dominate the recording, and to avoid the one noise type that competes with it directly.
Fix 1: Get closer to the microphone
This is the whole game, and almost nobody does it. Sound intensity falls off with the square of distance. Move from two feet away to one foot away and your voice arrives roughly four times stronger, while the room noise, which comes from all directions and is not attached to your face, barely changes.
Practically, that means:
- On a MacBook, the mic array is at the top of the screen near the camera. If you are leaning back in a chair, you are two or three feet away. Sit up and lean in slightly and you have made the single largest accuracy improvement available to you.
- On an external display setup, your Mac's mic may be behind the monitor or in a closed laptop off to the side. This is a common and invisible cause of bad accuracy. Check which input device is actually selected.
- On iPhone, hold it the way you would for a phone call rather than resting it flat on a table. A phone lying face-up on a desk is picking up the room as much as it is picking up you.
If you take one thing from this article, take this one. Proximity beats every piece of hardware you could buy, and it costs nothing.
Fix 2: Check which microphone is actually being used
A large share of "dictation got worse" reports are not noise at all. They are the wrong input device being selected. Bluetooth is the usual culprit: connected wireless earbuds may become the default input even when you would rather use the built-in mic, and earbud microphones sit near your ear, not your mouth.
On a Mac, open System Settings and look at Sound, then Input. Speak normally and watch the input level meter. If it barely moves, the selected device is not near your mouth or is not the device you think it is. If it pins to the top constantly even when you are silent, you are picking up a lot of room.
There is also a Bluetooth-specific trap worth knowing. When a wireless headset is used as a microphone, the connection typically switches to a mode that carries audio in both directions at reduced quality. You can hear it happen: your music suddenly sounds worse the moment the mic activates. That degraded input is being handed to the transcription engine. Fix 3: Change your position in the room, not the room
You usually cannot make a coffee shop quiet. You can almost always change where you sit, and it matters more than it sounds like it should.
- Put a wall behind you and the noise in front. Sitting with your back to a wall means less sound arriving from behind, and your voice reflects forward toward the mic rather than scattering.
- Avoid corners and hard-surfaced rooms. A room with bare walls, glass, and a hard floor returns your voice to the microphone as a smeared echo a fraction of a second late. Reverberation degrades recognition in a way that feels like noise but is not. A room with a rug, curtains, a sofa, or bookshelves is noticeably better.
- Get away from HVAC vents. Sitting directly under an air vent puts a steady wash of noise into every recording. Moving one table over can solve it.
- Distance yourself from conversations specifically. Given the choice between a spot near a loud machine and a spot near two people talking, take the machine every time.
Fix 4: Change how you speak
Noise changes what good dictation technique looks like, and most people adjust in exactly the wrong direction.
Do not shout. The instinct in a loud room is to raise your voice. Raising volume distorts vowels, pushes the microphone toward clipping, and makes you sound less like the speech the engine models well. Speak at a normal conversational level and solve the volume problem with distance instead.
Do not slow down to one word at a time. This is the most common mistake, and it actively makes things worse. Transcription uses surrounding words to resolve ambiguity. A word spoken in isolation has no context to disambiguate it, so isolated speech in a noisy room produces worse results than natural phrasing. Speak in complete phrases, at your normal pace.
Do pause between sentences rather than within them. A clean break at a sentence boundary gives the engine a natural segmentation point. Breaking in the middle of a clause does not.
Do wait a beat after starting. Beginning to speak the instant you press the key clips the first word. In a noisy environment, a clipped first word is much less recoverable than it is in a quiet one, because there is less context to reconstruct it from. A half-second pause fixes it permanently.

Fix 5: Hardware, in the right order
Only after the free fixes are exhausted is hardware worth thinking about. The order matters, because the price and the benefit are not correlated the way you would expect.
Wired earbuds with an inline mic are the underrated option. The mic sits a few inches from your mouth, the connection is wired so there is no Bluetooth quality degradation, and they cost very little. In a noisy environment these frequently outperform expensive wireless options for pure dictation.
A headset with a boom mic is the most reliable choice for consistently loud environments. The boom puts the capsule right next to your mouth, which maximizes the ratio of your voice to everything else. It is not elegant, but for someone dictating for hours in an open office it is the correct answer.
A dedicated USB microphone is excellent at a desk and irrelevant everywhere else. It sits on the desk, which means it is farther from your mouth than a boom or an earbud, and it is not portable. It is a great choice for a home office and the wrong choice for a cafe.

Environment by environment
The coffee shop
Better than its reputation. Music and machine noise are the easy noise types. The killer is the table of people talking next to you. Pick a seat away from conversation, put your back to a wall, and use earbuds so the mic is close to your mouth. Dictate in short bursts between the loud moments rather than trying to talk through the grinder.
The open-plan office
The hardest common environment, because it is made almost entirely of speech. A boom headset is close to mandatory here if you dictate regularly. There is also a social dimension nobody mentions: dictating at a desk surrounded by colleagues means your work is audible to them. Many people solve this by dictating in a booth or empty meeting room for anything substantial and typing for short replies.
The car
Road noise is steady and broadband, which is the friendly kind, so accuracy is often better than people expect. Two real cautions. First, safety comes first, and dictating while driving is subject to whatever local law says about phone use. Second, wind noise from an open window is genuinely destructive because it hits the microphone element directly. Windows up, fan down, and it works reasonably well.
Home with a family
Kids, television, and kitchen noise are all speech or speech-adjacent, so this is harder than it feels. The practical fix is usually timing rather than technique: batch the dictation-heavy work into the quiet part of the day and use the noisy part for tasks that do not need a microphone.
Outdoors
Wind is the only serious enemy. Traffic and general outdoor ambience are manageable. If there is any breeze, put the mic under a coat lapel or use earbuds where the body of the earbud shields the capsule. Holding a phone up into the wind will produce garbage no matter how good the software is.
What noise cannot explain
It is worth separating noise problems from the errors people blame on noise that have a different cause entirely.
If your dictation consistently mangles the same specific words — names, product terms, industry jargon, acronyms — that is not a noise problem and no microphone will fix it. The engine is hearing you fine and choosing a more common word that sounds similar. That is a vocabulary problem, and it needs a vocabulary solution. The honest limits
There are environments where dictation will not work well no matter what you do, and it is better to know that than to keep fighting.
A room where several people are talking at close range, an active construction site, a concert, a windy beach — in each of these the interfering sound either overlaps your voice in the frequencies that carry meaning or arrives at the microphone louder than you do. No software recovers information that never made it into the recording.
The realistic goal is not universal dictation. It is knowing which of your daily environments are workable, fixing the ones that are only marginal, and typing in the rest. Most people find that after the proximity and device-selection fixes, the number of genuinely unworkable environments is much smaller than they assumed.
