Short answer: Apple doesn't document why iPhone dictation sometimes types text twice, and none of its dictation pages mention it, so there's no official fix. People have reported it for years. Worth trying, in order: dictate in Notes to see whether one app is involved, toggle Enable Dictation, restart, update iOS, then check keyboard settings. Reset Keyboard Dictionary comes last.

Mac and iPhone Dictate into any app on your Mac or iPhone. Hold a key, speak, release. Download for MaciPhone

You dictate "see you at noon" and your message says "see you at noon see you at noon". Or a whole sentence lands twice, and you only notice after you've sent it. You're not imagining it. People have been reporting that iPhone dictation doubles everything on Apple's own forums since at least 2022, and Apple hasn't published a cause.

This post says what is and isn't known, then gives the checks in the order that isolates the problem fastest. We read Apple's iPhone User Guide and support pages on October 30, 2026, when the current version was iOS 27.

Why it happens

Apple's iPhone dictation guide, its dictation commands page and its Mac dictation troubleshooting page don't mention dictated text being duplicated or repeated. Apple doesn't say why it happens and doesn't offer a fix. What follows is what people report and what's worth checking, not a confirmed mechanism.

1. It's reported on many iPhones and iOS versions

The symptom shows up in an Apple Community thread from October 2022 on iOS 16, which 190 people marked "Me too", where the poster says the text "looks normal when I first review it" and then a large portion is duplicated. Another from January 2023 describes "a sentence, a paragraph, etc." repeating. It's still being reported: a thread started in March 2026 on iOS 26.3.1 has a May reply about dictation that "repeats words". Those threads show the symptom is common. They don't show a cause.

2. It may or may not follow one app

The reports don't agree on this. The January 2023 poster says it "happens in any and all apps", while a Mac report from October 2024 names Safari. That's why the first check below is dictating in Notes. If Notes is clean and one other app isn't, you've narrowed it to that app. If Notes doubles too, changing apps won't help and the settings checks matter more.

3. Keyboard helpers may be involved

iPhone's keyboard has helpers that rewrite text as it appears: Auto-Correction (on by default, per Apple), predictive text and Text Replacement shortcuts. Apple doesn't link any of them to repeated dictation. But they all touch the same text field at the same moment, so they're cheap to rule out. Our fix steps below turn them off one at a time.

4. Something a toggle or restart may clear

The standard advice in these threads, including the top-ranked reply in the 2022 one, is to turn Dictation off, restart, and turn it back on. It doesn't always work: a July 2023 poster says the "disable-reboot-enable dictation" routine "did nothing", and a Mac user says the same. It's cheap to try, but it's community advice, not an Apple fix. Apple only documents how dictation starts and stops: you tap the Dictate button, say "stop dictation", or stay silent for 30 seconds.

5. Voice Control running at the same time

Apple says that when Voice Control is on, you use Voice Control to dictate and "standard iOS Dictation isn't available". Some community replies blame having both active for duplication. Apple doesn't say that, so treat it as one more setting to check rather than a diagnosis.

How to fix it on iPhone

Go in this order. Each step is cheap, and the first one tells you the most.

  1. Dictate in Notes first. Open Notes, tap the Dictate button on the keyboard and say two plain sentences. If Notes is clean and your other app doubles the text, the next step, which is about that app, matters most; hold off on resetting anything.
  2. Update the app that doubles. Open the App Store, check for an update to that app, and try again. If you dictate into a browser form or a web editor, try a different one for comparison.
  3. Turn dictation off and on: Settings > General > Keyboard > Enable Dictation. Turn it off, wait a few seconds and turn it back on. If a prompt appears, tap Enable Dictation. This is Apple's own path for switching dictation on.
  4. Restart the iPhone. It's the oldest fix and it costs nothing. Dictate in Notes again to confirm.
  5. Update iOS: Settings > General > Software Update. Apple changes dictation between releases. On iOS 27, for example, dictation uses an on-device model to improve spelling, punctuation and capitalization in English on iPhone 17 Pro, iPhone 17 Pro Max, iPhone Air or later. Apple doesn't say any update fixes doubled text, so treat this as a check, not a cure.
  6. Check the keyboard helpers: Settings > General > Keyboard. Turn off Auto-Correction and Predictive Text (Apple calls it Predictive on some versions), and look through Text Replacement for a shortcut that expands a word you dictate. Test after each change, and turn back on what you don't want gone. If Auto-Punctuation is on, try it off for a test too.
  7. Check Voice Control. If it's on, standard Dictation isn't available, so turn it off and dictate normally to see whether the doubling goes away.
  8. Last resort: Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset > Reset Keyboard Dictionary. Think twice. One Apple page says it deletes "all custom words and shortcuts", another says it erases only the words you've added. Assume your text replacement shortcuts could go as well.

When the fix doesn't stick

If the doubling comes back every few days, no setting on your phone may be able to remove it. Apple doesn't say why it happens, so it can't say what would stop it for good, and nobody outside Apple can see inside the dictation service.

The practical answer is to stop depending on the combination that misbehaves. Dictate in Notes, check the text and paste it across, or use a dictation keyboard that has its own way of getting text into the app.

Where Voice Keyboard Pro fits

Voice Keyboard Pro is a full iPhone keyboard with the microphone built in. You tap Speak, talk, and tap Stop. Nothing is typed into the field while you're still talking: the finished text goes in once, after you tap Stop, into whatever app you're typing in.

It also handles the other kind of doubling, the one you cause yourself. A stutter or an immediate restart, where you say the same few words twice in a row, is collapsed to one copy. Repetition you use for emphasis is kept. If you want your words exactly as spoken, Smart Rewrite can be switched off in the app's settings. The long-press clean up action goes further and drops sentences you said twice.

Two things to know. You add it once under Settings and turn on Allow Full Access, which our Full Access guide walks through. And because iOS doesn't let keyboards use the microphone directly, tapping Speak may briefly open the Voice Keyboard Pro app to start listening before you're back where you were. We can't promise that no app anywhere will ever misbehave. For a wider comparison, see Voice Keyboard Pro vs Apple dictation on iPhone.

Habits that make duplicates easier to catch

Frequently asked questions

Why does my iPhone voice to text keep duplicating?

Apple doesn't document a cause. Community reports run from 2022 to 2026 across several iPhone models. Checking whether it only happens in one app, then toggling Enable Dictation, restarting and updating iOS, are the quickest ways to narrow it down, though some posters say toggling didn't help.

Why is iPhone dictation repeating words in one app only?

That points at the combination of the app and the keyboard rather than your phone. Try dictating in Notes. If Notes is fine, update the app that repeats, and consider dictating into Notes and pasting while you wait for a fix.

Is iPhone dictation typing twice a sign something is wrong with my iPhone?

Nothing in Apple's pages says so. It's reported on a range of iPhones, from an iPhone SE to an iPhone 17 Pro Max, and on Macs as well, so it isn't tied to one model. Apple hasn't said whether the cause is software or hardware.

Will Reset Keyboard Dictionary fix dictation that duplicates text?

Apple doesn't say it will. It also removes words you've taught the keyboard and, according to one Apple page, your text shortcuts. Try every other step first, and see our general iPhone dictation fixes for the rest of the checklist.

Does dictation duplicate text on Mac too?

People report it there too, on Apple Community threads from 2023 and 2024. Apple's Mac troubleshooting page doesn't mention it either. If you dictate on a Mac a lot, Voice Keyboard Pro's Mac app types at the cursor without depending on Apple's Dictation being on.

The bottom line

Doubled dictation is a long-running complaint with no published cause, so the job is to find out whether one app is involved and to rule out the cheap suspects before you reset anything. Notes tells you the first part in a minute. If the doubling keeps coming back in an app you rely on, dictate somewhere that behaves and paste, or use a keyboard that puts the finished text in once you stop.
