You start it from the microphone key on the iPhone keyboard, which appears at the bottom of the keyboard or next to the space bar depending on your iPhone and keyboard layout. The words appear in the text field as you speak, and you can edit them before sending. Dictation is part of iOS, not Messenger, and it does not need Messenger's microphone permission.
Voice messages, which belong to Messenger
Messenger has its own microphone icon in the chat toolbar, beside the text field. That button records an audio clip and sends it as a voice message. It does not produce text. It uses Messenger's own access to your microphone, which you control in the iPhone Settings app.
If you have been tapping Messenger's microphone and expecting text, the app is doing exactly what it was designed to do. Tap into the text field first so the keyboard opens, then use the microphone on the keyboard instead.
The quick test for real dictation failures: open the Notes app, tap into a note, and dictate a sentence using the keyboard microphone. If it works in Notes but not in Messenger, you have a Messenger-specific problem and the fixes below apply. Fix 1: Turn on dictation in iOS settings
Open Settings, go to General, then Keyboard, and scroll down to Enable Dictation. Make sure it is switched on. If it was off, the keyboard microphone will not appear at all, in Messenger or anywhere else.
While you are there, check the Dictation Languages option, if your iPhone shows one. Dictation listens in the language of your active keyboard, and speaking one language while the keyboard is set to another produces garbled text rather than no text. People often read that as a broken microphone when it is really a language mismatch.
Fix 2: Bring back a missing microphone key
If dictation is enabled but the microphone key is not on the keyboard, a few things can hide it.
- Screen Time restrictions. Go to Settings, Screen Time, Content and Privacy Restrictions, then Allowed Apps. If Siri and Dictation is switched off there, the microphone key disappears. This is common on phones that were set up by a parent or an employer.
- A different keyboard is active. If you use a third-party keyboard, it may not include a microphone key, or it may place it somewhere different. Tap and hold the globe key to switch keyboards and see whether the Apple keyboard shows the mic.
- A restricted or secure field. iOS hides dictation in some protected fields such as passwords. The Messenger message box is a normal text field, but a login or verification screen inside the app may not allow it.

Fix 3: Make sure the message box has focus
Dictation types into whichever field has the cursor. In Messenger, that is not always the message box you are looking at.
Messenger's composer changes as you use it. Tapping the camera, gallery, sticker, or emoji controls can move focus away from the text field or replace the keyboard with a picker. If you then tap the microphone area, you may be on a different control than you think. Tap directly into the "Message" text field, confirm you see a blinking cursor and the standard keyboard, and then start dictating.
The same applies to the search bar at the top of your chat list. If you tapped search to find a conversation and then opened a chat, check that focus actually moved into the chat's text field.
Fix 4: Force quit and update Messenger
Like any app that is left running for days, Messenger can get into a state where the text field stops accepting input properly. Swipe up from the bottom of the screen and pause to open the app switcher, then swipe Messenger away. Reopen it and try again.
If that helps only briefly, check for an update. Open the App Store, tap your profile picture, and look for Messenger in the list of pending updates. Messenger updates frequently, and text input issues introduced in one version are often fixed in the next.
Fix 5: Check your connection and Low Power Mode
Depending on your iPhone model and language, dictation may need an internet connection to process speech. On a weak or dropping connection, dictation can start, show the listening animation, and then produce nothing or stop early.

Fix 6: Watch for AirPods and Bluetooth devices
When Bluetooth headphones are connected, your iPhone may use their microphone instead of the built-in one. If your AirPods are in their case with the lid open, in a pocket, or sitting across the room, dictation may be listening to the wrong microphone and hearing almost nothing.
Disconnect Bluetooth audio from Control Center, or simply put the headphones away, and dictate again using the iPhone's own microphone. If dictation then works, the headset was the issue.
Fix 7: Separate a voice message problem from a dictation problem
If what is actually failing is Messenger's voice message button, the fix is different. Open Settings, scroll down to Messenger, and make sure Microphone is switched on. If it is off, Messenger cannot record voice clips. That setting has no effect on keyboard dictation, which is why dictation can work while voice messages fail, or the other way around.
If the Microphone toggle is on and voice messages still fail, close any other app that might be using the microphone, such as a call or a recording app, and try again.
Fix 8: Handle dictation that stops too soon
A common complaint is not that dictation fails outright, but that it stops as soon as you pause to think. You say half a sentence, take a breath, and the microphone closes. iPhone dictation ends after a stretch of silence, and there is no setting to change how long it waits.

Fix 9: Restart the iPhone and update iOS
If none of the above has helped, restart the iPhone. It clears stuck keyboard and speech processes that force quitting Messenger does not touch. Then open Settings, General, Software Update, and install anything available. Apple regularly fixes keyboard and dictation issues in iOS updates.
If dictation stopped right after an iOS update, go back to fix 1 and fix 2 first, since the dictation toggle and Screen Time settings are the ones most likely to have changed.
