Short answer: If Mac dictation is not working in Reddit, click inside the comment box, post body or chat field until a cursor blinks, then start dictation. Reddit on a Mac is a website with no voice typing of its own, so your words go wherever keyboard focus is.

Someone has asked a question you can actually answer, the thread is open in a browser tab, and saying the explanation would be much quicker than typing it. You press your dictation shortcut, speak for a minute, and nothing appears. Or the page jumps halfway down the thread. Or the whole answer lands in the search bar. Or it goes into the box perfectly, and after you click Comment the year at the start of your second paragraph has turned into "1." and three paragraphs have run together into one.

Four facts about Reddit on a Mac explain almost all of it. First, on a Mac Reddit is a website with no voice typing of its own, so dictation comes from macOS or from a dictation app, and both deliver text to whatever has keyboard focus, exactly as if you had typed it. Second, most of a Reddit page is for reading. The comment box sits collapsed as a single line until you click it, and every Reply link opens another box. Third, the comment box has two modes, a rich-text editor and a Markdown editor, and the same characters mean different things in each. Fourth, nothing is public until you click Comment or Post, and after that some of it cannot be changed. The title of a post is fixed for good.

So most Reddit dictation problems on a Mac are about where focus was when you spoke and what the editor did with the text, not about your microphone. This guide works through every cause in order, starting with the most common one. If dictation is failing in every app on your Mac and not only in Reddit, start with our complete guide to Mac dictation not working instead. Reddit changes its site regularly, so exact button names and positions may differ a little from what you see on your screen.

First, which Reddit are you in?

On a Mac, "Reddit" can mean several different pages, and a fix that works in one may not apply in another.

At the time of writing Reddit does not publish a Mac app of its own, so every one of these is a web page in a browser. Then there is the question of which account. Plenty of people have more than one, and each browser, browser profile and installed web app keeps its own sign-in. Knowing which page and which account you are in settles a good share of the confusion below.

How dictation reaches Reddit on a Mac

Apple dictation is built into macOS. You start it with the dictation shortcut, usually the microphone key or whichever shortcut is set in System Settings under Keyboard, or from Edit, then Start Dictation in your browser's menu bar. It sends its text to whichever field has keyboard focus. Reddit does not need microphone permission for that, because it is your Mac that is listening, not the web page.

Menu bar dictation apps, including ours, look much the same from Reddit's side. They put text at your cursor, and many of them deliver it the way a paste does. They need their own Microphone permission, plus Accessibility permission to put text into other apps, under System Settings, then Privacy & Security. Neither Reddit nor your browser needs anything extra, and there is no extension to install.

That leaves one rule to remember: dictated text goes to whatever has focus, and Reddit treats it exactly like typing. A sentence in the comment box is a comment. The same sentence in the search bar is a search, and with no field in focus at all it may be read as a string of key presses.

The 30-second TextEdit test

Before you change anything, open TextEdit, create a blank document, start dictation and say a sentence. Then go back to Reddit, open a thread, click in the comment box so the cursor blinks there, and dictate the same sentence.

Command-Z works in the comment box. If a paragraph lands somewhere it should not, undo it before you try to repair it by hand.

The 10 fixes, in order

1. Click in the comment box until the cursor blinks

This is the cause behind most "dictation does nothing in Reddit" reports. A thread is a page for reading: the post at the top, then comment after comment. None of that text can be edited, and clicking on it does not place a cursor. Clicking a comment may collapse it. Clicking a username or a link takes you somewhere else.

The place to type is the comment box, and on the current site it starts out as a single line with a short prompt in it. It becomes an editor only when you click it. Until then there is no insertion point anywhere on the page, and dictated text has nowhere to go. Click the box, wait for it to open, and look for the blinking cursor inside it before you speak.

Scrolling does not move focus. If you opened the box and then scrolled down to reread the comment you are answering, the box may still have focus, or a click along the way may have taken it. The same is true after you switch tabs or come back from another app. One click in the box, and one look for the cursor, is the whole check.

The page for creating a post works the same way. It is a form with several fields, and only a click in the body puts the cursor in the body.

2. Reply in the right box

Every comment has its own Reply link, and each one opens its own box directly under that comment. The box at the top of the thread answers the post itself. A box under a comment answers that person. On a busy thread it is easy to have two or three boxes open at once, some of them scrolled out of view.

Dictation goes to the box that has the cursor, which is not always the one in the middle of your screen. If you spoke and nothing seemed to happen, scroll up and down before you repeat yourself. Your paragraph may be sitting in a reply box you opened earlier.

It matters where it lands. A reply notifies the person you replied to and is shown under their comment. The same words as a top-level comment are a separate comment on the post. If the text is in the wrong box, select it, cut it with Command-X, click in the right box and paste it with Command-V. Then close the boxes you are not using so that only one is open.

3. Keep your words out of the title, the search bar and link fields

Reddit has plenty of text fields that are not the one you want, and each will take every word you say.

The title deserves a second look for another reason. Once a post is submitted, its title cannot be edited. A misheard word in the body can be corrected afterwards. A misheard word in the title stays until you delete the post and submit it again. Type titles by hand, or read a dictated title twice before you click Post.

4. Know which editor you are in: rich text or Markdown

This is the cause behind most "Reddit changed what I said" reports. The comment box on the current site has two modes. In the rich-text editor, what you see is roughly what gets posted, and formatting comes from the toolbar. In the Markdown editor, formatting comes from characters in the text itself, and the result only shows after you post. A control in the editor's formatting options switches between the two, and your account settings can make Markdown the default. Old Reddit's box is always Markdown.

Dictated prose is full of characters that Markdown reads as instructions.

There are three ways to deal with it. Switch to the rich-text editor before you dictate, so the characters are taken literally. Or stay in Markdown and put a backslash in front of any character you want shown as itself. Or simply read the comment after it is posted and edit it if something changed. The rich-text editor is not completely neutral either: depending on the version of the site, it can turn a few typed patterns into formatting as they arrive, and text that is delivered as keystrokes is more likely to trigger that than text delivered as a paste.

Formatting also carries on. If the cursor is inside a quotation, a list or a code block when you speak, your words take on that formatting. Put the cursor in an ordinary paragraph first.

5. Stop single keys acting as shortcuts

When no text field has focus, a web page is free to treat key presses as commands. Reddit has offered single-key shortcuts for moving between posts and voting, and extensions made for Reddit add many more. The browser has its own as well: with no field in focus, the Space bar scrolls the page down.

That is how a sentence can make a thread jump around. If your dictation tool delivers text as a series of keystrokes and nothing has focus, each letter is a key press on the page. The page scrolls, a different post is highlighted, and in the worst case a vote is cast that you did not intend. Text that is delivered as a paste usually does nothing at all in that situation, which is safer but just as confusing.

The fix is the same as fix 1: click in the box and check for the cursor before you speak. If the page did react, scroll back to where you were and check that you have not voted on anything by accident. If an extension is supplying the shortcuts, its settings usually let you turn keyboard navigation off.

6. Make sure you can comment here

Sometimes the page is in front of you and will not take a comment, and the reason has nothing to do with dictation.

The check is always the same. If no cursor is blinking in a text field, there is nowhere for dictated words to go, and if the button will not post, read the message next to it.

7. Remember that Return sends in chat

In a comment or a post, Return starts a new line and nothing is sent until you click the button. Chat is different. In Reddit's chat, as in most chat tools, Return sends the message, and Shift-Return starts a new line.

That catches dictation in one specific way. If you say "new line" or "new paragraph" and your dictation tool turns that into a Return key press, the first half of your message is sent on the spot, and the rest arrives as a second message or stays in the field. Speak a chat message as one run without spoken line breaks, read it, then press Return yourself.

Chat also has a separate message field from the thread behind it. If the chat panel is open over a thread, check which of the two has the cursor. A message meant for one person should not end up as a public comment, and a comment should not end up in a chat.

8. Do not lose it: a comment is not a draft

A half-written comment lives in the page, and the page is easy to lose. Clicking a link in the thread, pressing the browser's Back button, reloading, or letting the browser restart for an update can all empty the box. Reddit sometimes restores unsent text when you come back, but do not count on it.

Posts are better protected. At the time of writing, the page for creating a post can save a draft to your account, so a long post can be written in more than one sitting. Use that for anything substantial.

Two more cases look like lost dictation.

For anything longer than a few sentences, an old habit is worth keeping: select the text and copy it before you click Comment. If the submission fails, you can paste it straight back.

9. Sign back in when Reddit asks, and clear Secure Input

Reddit signs you out now and then, and it shows a sign-in window when you try to comment, vote or post while signed out. If that window is in front of you while your eyes are on your notes, a dictated paragraph goes nowhere, because the page is waiting for a username and a password.

There is a second effect for dictation apps. While a password field is active, macOS uses Secure Input, which stops other apps from reading or sending keystrokes. A dictation app may not see its hotkey, or may not be able to deliver its text, for as long as the cursor sits in that password box. A password manager prompt can have the same effect. Sign in, let the thread load again, click back into the comment box and try once more. If your hotkey stopped working in every app just after you typed a password somewhere, look for a password field still waiting in another window and close it.

10. Rule out the browser, then check dictation on your Mac

Reddit runs in a browser, so the browser is part of the problem space. Open the thread in a private window, or in a different browser, sign in and dictate there. If it works, something in your everyday browser profile is interfering.

Extensions are the usual suspects. Extensions made for Reddit change the comment box and add keyboard shortcuts. Writing assistants and grammar checkers attach themselves to editable text, and they can reposition the cursor or rewrite text as it arrives. Disable extensions one at a time until dictation behaves. Our guides to Mac dictation not working in Chrome and in Safari cover the browser-specific causes.

If you use a dictation app, check its two permissions under System Settings, then Privacy & Security: Microphone, so it can hear you, and Accessibility, so it can put text into your browser. After you grant a permission, quit the app and open it again. If your dictation shortcut matches a browser shortcut, the browser may act on it first, and our guide to a Mac dictation shortcut that is not working walks through finding conflicts.

If dictation failed in TextEdit too, Reddit is not the problem. Open System Settings, go to Keyboard, and make sure Dictation is on. Check which shortcut it uses and that the dictation language matches the language you are speaking. Check the microphone as well: a video call or a screen recorder can keep hold of it, and a headset that was unplugged can leave your Mac listening to the wrong input. Then restart your Mac, which clears stuck dictation services in one step.

Reddit quirks that look like broken dictation

Quick triage

Reddit on a Mac versus on iPhone

Many people read Reddit on the phone and write the longer answers at a desk, and dictation behaves differently in each place. On iPhone, Reddit is an app, the mic that types lives on the keyboard, and the first question is always whether the keyboard appeared. If that is where you are stuck, our guide to iPhone dictation not working in Reddit goes through it. On a Mac there is no keyboard on screen to look for. A shortcut or a hotkey types wherever the cursor is, so the question is always where the cursor is.

The same principle carries over to other places where people talk in threads. If you also spend time in chat communities, our guide to Mac dictation not working in Discord covers an app where Return sends the message and the traps are a little different.

A dictation workflow that suits Reddit

  1. Open the thread in a tab of its own. Read what you are answering first, then scroll to the place where your reply belongs.
  2. Open one box and check for the cursor. One box, one cursor, no guessing.
  3. Dictate one paragraph at a time. Speak in full sentences, the way you would explain it to someone across a table, and glance at the box at the end of each paragraph.
  4. Type the exact parts. Community names, usernames, links, code and anything with symbols are quicker and safer by hand.
  5. Add paragraph breaks. A long answer in one block is hard to read, however good it is.
  6. Read it, copy it, then click Comment. Names, numbers and the title of a post get a second look.

An honest limit: a one-line reply is usually quicker to type than to dictate. Voice earns its place on the long answer, the detailed explanation and the post that tells the whole story.

Those are worth getting right, because speaking is much faster than typing. Most adults type around 40 words per minute, and even professional typists usually sit around 80 to 100, while normal speech runs at 130 to 150 words per minute. A thorough answer of a few hundred words is a couple of minutes of talking. Our guide on how to dictate Reddit posts and comments covers the day-to-day workflow once everything is working.

One hotkey for every thread

Apple dictation is free and built in, but it can stop listening when you pause to think, it depends on settings that are easy to switch off by accident, and fixing a misheard word means going back and editing by hand.

Voice Keyboard Pro is a menu bar app for Mac. Click where you want the text, hold your hotkey, speak, and release. The text appears at your cursor, system-wide, in a Reddit comment box, in a chat, in your email and in every other app you use. The microphone stays live while you hold the key, so a pause to find the right word does not end the session. Like any dictation app, it puts text wherever focus is, and Reddit still decides what that text means, so fixes 1 to 9 still apply.

A few features are useful beyond a comment box:

On privacy, our servers store only operational pings. No audio and no transcript content is stored. There is a free tier with daily limits, and Pro is $4.99 a month or $34.99 a year. On iPhone, the same product is a custom keyboard with a built-in mic button, so you can dictate in any iOS app, the Reddit app included.

Frequently asked questions

Does Reddit have voice typing on a Mac?

No. Reddit's website has no dictation button of its own. On a Mac you dictate with the dictation built into macOS or with a dictation app, and both deliver text to whichever field has keyboard focus.

Is there a Reddit app for Mac?

At the time of writing, Reddit does not publish a Mac app of its own, and on a Mac you use the website. Safari and Chrome can install that site as an app-like window with its own Dock icon, but it is the same web page and behaves the same way with dictation.

Why does dictation work in TextEdit but not in Reddit?

Almost always because the comment box has not been opened, or because focus is somewhere else, such as the search bar or another reply box. Click in the box until the cursor blinks, then speak.

Why did my number change to "1." after I posted?

In Markdown mode, a line that starts with a number and a full stop is read as a numbered list, and the list can be renumbered from one. Put a backslash before the full stop, or dictate in the rich-text editor.

Why did my paragraphs merge into one?

Markdown joins lines that are separated by a single line break. Leave a blank line between paragraphs, or switch to the rich-text editor, where a new paragraph looks the same in the box as it does once posted.

Can I fix a dictation mistake after posting?

In a comment or in the body of a text post, yes: open it for editing and correct it. In the title of a post, no. A title cannot be changed after the post is submitted, so read it twice first.

Does my browser need microphone permission for Reddit?

Not for Apple dictation or a menu bar dictation app, because your Mac or the app does the listening. A dictation app needs Microphone and Accessibility permission in System Settings. Reddit itself needs nothing.

What to do next

Run the 30-second TextEdit test, then work through the fixes that match what you saw. For most people it is fix 1 or fix 2: the comment box was never opened, or the words went into a different box from the one on screen. If what you posted does not match what you said, it is fix 4. Whatever the cause, read a dictated comment before you click the button, and read a title twice, because a title is the one thing Reddit will not let you correct. And if you want dictation that works the same way in every thread and every app on your Mac, try Voice Keyboard Pro's free tier on your next long answer.
