Short answer: Whisper Memos is an iPhone and Apple Watch recorder: you record a memo, it transcribes in the cloud and emails you the result, or sends it to apps like Notion. Voice Keyboard Pro is a keyboard on iPhone and a hold-to-talk app on Mac, so your words arrive in the app you're already writing in. They do different jobs, and you can use both.

Whisper Memos is an iPhone and Apple Watch voice recorder: you record a memo, it transcribes it, and the transcript arrives as an email or goes to a tool like Notion. If you're looking for a Whisper Memos alternative, you may want your speech to land directly in Messages, Mail or Notes as you write, or you may want a Mac app too. We make Voice Keyboard Pro, so we're not neutral. Every fact about Whisper Memos below comes from whispermemos.com and its App Store listing, checked in October 2026.

What Whisper Memos does well

It's built for capture. The site says "Record a voice memo, receive it as email," and offers a lock screen widget, a Watch complication, the Action Button and Siri or Shortcuts to start recording. If an idea arrives while you're walking and your phone is in your pocket, you can start from your wrist.

Long recordings are covered. The site's FAQ says each recording can be up to 90 minutes, with no daily limit on the number of memos, and all plans include unlimited memos.

No signal isn't a problem either. You can record offline, and the app saves memos locally and uploads them for transcription once you're back online, on both iPhone and Apple Watch.

Memos go where you want them. By default a memo goes to your email with automatic paragraphs and a summary, and the site lists integrations with Notion, Trello, Todoist, Zapier, webhooks and more, plus custom summary prompts. If your workflow is "record now, file later," that's a strong fit.

It also has Meeting mode, which separates the transcript by speaker and lets you name each speaker and give them a color, and you can import audio files you already have, including M4A, MP3 and WAV. It lists "over 50 languages", and it's actively updated: version 2.1.1 came out on the App Store on October 28, 2026.

Why people look for a Whisper Memos alternative

1. You want text where you're typing, not in your inbox

Whisper Memos' own description is that you record a memo and receive a formatted email "seconds later", or send it on through an integration. That's a different job from typing a reply in Messages or a paragraph in Notes. Its site doesn't describe a keyboard that inserts text into other apps, so to use a memo in another app you copy it over from the email or the integration.

2. You don't have an Apple Watch, or you also use a Mac

The site lists iPhone and Apple Watch. The App Store listing says it requires iOS 17.6 or later and watchOS 10.6 or later. The listing also says the iPhone app can run on a Mac with an M1 chip or later, marked "Designed for iPhone", but nothing on its site describes a Mac app that types at your cursor. If you also write on a Mac, that's a gap. Voice Keyboard Pro has a Mac app and an iPhone keyboard on one plan.

3. You want to compare what the plans cost

The pricing page lists $9.99 a month billed monthly, or $5.83 a month billed as $69.99 a year, with the same features either way. It says the app is "free to try", but we couldn't find the limits or trial length on the pages we checked, so we can't say what you get before paying. The App Store listing also shows in-app purchases of Annual $69.99, Monthly $9.99 and Weekly $8.00 at the time we looked.

None of these is a flaw in what Whisper Memos set out to do. A recorder and a keyboard answer different moments: one is for when you want to talk and sort it out later, the other is for when the words are going somewhere right now, such as a reply to a friend or a line in a document.

What to look for in an alternative

Voice Keyboard Pro

On iPhone, Voice Keyboard Pro is a full keyboard with a microphone built in. Tap Speak, talk, and tap Stop, and the text goes into whatever app you're typing in: Messages, WhatsApp, Mail, Notes, Slack, any app that allows third-party keyboards. It doesn't stop when you pause: it listens until you tap Stop, and a single very long dictation has a safety cap of about ten minutes. It cleans up punctuation, grammar and filler words as you go, and long-pressing Speak gives actions such as fix grammar, change tone, shorten, or turn into bullet points. You can also speak a change to fix what you just said.

One iOS limit applies: keyboards can't use the microphone directly, so if no listening session is running, tapping Speak briefly opens our app to start one before you're back in yours. Setup needs Allow Full Access, covered in our Full Access guide. It needs a connection on iPhone; there's no offline mode.

It also does meeting transcription on iPhone, with a live transcript and then a summary with decisions and action items, and on Mac it records calls and rooms with speakers labeled Speaker A and B, not by name. It doesn't import existing audio or video files, and there's no Apple Watch app. It supports 19 languages with automatic detection.

On Mac it's a menu bar app: hold a key, speak, let go, and the text is typed at your cursor. Transcription can run entirely on the Mac with Offline Mode on Apple silicon. On our website the Pro plan is $4.99 a month (the monthly plan starts with a 3-day free trial), $34.99 a year or $1.99 a week, with the same features on each, cancel anytime and a 14-day refund. In-app prices on the App Store differ. There's no free plan. For other voice note apps, see our comparisons with AudioPen, Letterly and Voicenotes.

When Whisper Memos is the better pick

Pick Whisper Memos if you record on an Apple Watch, if you make long memos while walking or driving, or if you often have no signal and want to record now and transcribe later. Pick it if you want transcripts routed to email, Notion or a webhook, or if you have audio files to transcribe. We have no Apple Watch app, no integrations of that kind and no audio file import.

Frequently asked questions

How much does Whisper Memos cost?

As listed on whispermemos.com in October 2026, $9.99 a month billed monthly or $69.99 a year. Its site says it's free to try but doesn't say what the limits are. The App Store listing shows its own in-app prices, including a weekly option at $8.00.

Does Whisper Memos work on Android or Mac?

Its site describes an iPhone and Apple Watch app, plus a free web tool for transcribing an uploaded recording, added in September 2026. Its App Store listing says the iPhone app can run on Macs with an M1 chip or later. We found no Android app on the pages we checked, and Voice Keyboard Pro has no Android app either.

Does Whisper Memos work offline?

It records offline and uploads for transcription when you're back online. Transcription itself runs in the cloud.

Can Whisper Memos type into other apps?

Its site describes sending memos by email or to integrations, and doesn't describe typing into other apps. Voice Keyboard Pro's iPhone keyboard does that.

Is Whisper Notes the same app?

No. Whisper Notes is a separate product with its own site, and the facts above are only about Whisper Memos. We compare it in our Whisper Notes alternative post.

The bottom line

Whisper Memos is for capturing thoughts, from your wrist if you like, and sending the transcript somewhere. Voice Keyboard Pro is for typing by voice into whatever you're already writing. If your problem is a long walk and an idea you want filed, take the recorder. If your problem is a message you'd rather say than type, take the keyboard, and you can get it from the download page.
