Short answer: Whisper Notes is a fully on-device transcription app for iPhone and Apple silicon Macs, bought once, and it imports audio files, which we can't. Choose an alternative if you want to dictate into other iPhone apps from a keyboard, need Intel Mac support, or want live meeting notes with a summary. Voice Keyboard Pro does those, but it's a subscription.
Whisper Notes is an offline speech-to-text app for iPhone, iPad and Apple silicon Macs. You record or import audio, it transcribes on the device, and you pay once. People look for a Whisper Notes alternative when they want to dictate into other apps on an iPhone, need an Intel Mac to work, or want live meeting notes with a summary as the call happens.
We make Voice Keyboard Pro, so weigh what follows with that in mind. Every fact about Whisper Notes comes from its own website, changelog and App Store page, checked in October 2026. Where it beats us, we say so.
What Whisper Notes does well
It has a clear idea and sticks to it. These points are from its site.
- It's fully on device. Its site says "Your audio never leaves your device", that it uses no analytics or tracking, and that it runs no transcription servers.
- You pay once. $7.99 once on the App Store covers iPhone, iPad and the Mac App Store build. The Mac app from its website is a separate $14 one-time license, and it's free for 5,000 words a week. No subscription either way.
- It transcribes files. You can import MP3, M4A and WAV, share from Voice Memos on iPhone, or pick several files at once. It separates speakers on the device, and exports transcripts with timestamps or as SRT subtitles (VTT too on the Mac).
- It reaches into your workflow. Its site lists Lock Screen recording, Shortcuts actions, and on the Mac from its website a command-line tool and a built-in MCP server.
- It covers 100+ languages, per its site.
- It's actively updated. The changelog lists a Mac release, v1.6.5, dated October 28, 2026.
Those are real strengths. For transcribing recordings privately at a one-time price, it does what it says.
Why people look for a Whisper Notes alternative
1. They want to dictate into other apps on iPhone
Its site describes the iPhone app as a place to record, import and transcribe. The system-wide "hold Fn in any app" typing it describes is for the Mac app from its website. The site doesn't describe an iPhone keyboard that types into Messages or Mail. If your main need is dictating messages and emails from your phone, that's a gap in what it says it does.
2. Meetings don't get a live transcript
Its FAQ answers "Does it support real-time transcription?" with "Not yet". It adds that text appears gradually while it processes, and that it transcribes after you finish recording. For short dictation that matters less, since the Mac's hold-Fn typing puts text in when you release the key. For meetings it means the transcript arrives after the call rather than filling in as people talk.
3. Device requirements
Its site says iPhone 12 or later on iOS 18, and all M-series Macs. It states plainly that Intel Macs aren't supported and that there is no Windows or Android version. Its App Store page lists a slightly different minimum (a device with the A12 Bionic chip or later), so check the one you're buying from. If you use an Intel Mac or an iPhone that can't run iOS 18, it won't work for you.
4. Two products behind one name
The Mac App Store build and the Mac app from its website differ. Its site says Apple's restrictions keep hold-Fn voice typing out of the Mac App Store version, and that the website build also adds the on-device AI assistant. Both come with the website build, which is free for 5,000 words a week or $14 once. That's clearly explained, but it means picking the right download before you buy.
What to look for in an alternative
- Whether you dictate into other apps (messages, email, chat) or transcribe recordings. These are different jobs.
- Whether text should appear as soon as you stop talking, or after a full pass over a recording.
- Which devices you own: Intel Mac, older iPhone, iPad.
- Where audio goes. On-device only, or a cloud option you're comfortable with.
- One-time price against subscription, and what you get for either.
- Meeting notes: live transcript, summary and action items, and whether the other side of the call is captured.
Voice Keyboard Pro
Voice Keyboard Pro is built for the other job: putting your words into the app you're already in, on a Mac or an iPhone. On the Mac, it lives in the menu bar: hold a key you choose (Left Control by default), speak, let go, and the text is typed at your cursor in whatever app has focus. It isn't dependent on Apple's Dictation being turned on. There's no hands-free or toggle mode on Mac, because it listens only while you hold the key.
On iPhone it's a full keyboard with a microphone built in. Tap Speak, talk, tap Stop, and the text goes into the app you're in. Because iOS doesn't let keyboards use the microphone directly, tapping Speak may briefly open our app to start listening before you're back where you were. Setup means adding the keyboard and turning on Allow Full Access, covered in our Full Access guide. See also our look at the best voice keyboards for iPhone.
Smart Rewrite works out punctuation, tidies the text and matches the tone of the app you're in, and it can be switched off. It has 19 languages with automatic detection, a personal vocabulary that learns names and jargon, and, on the Mac, voice snippets and AI commands for selected text.
Meeting notes work on both. On the Mac, record a call (Zoom, Google Meet, Teams, Webex, Slack, FaceTime) or a meeting in the room, and you get a live transcript with speakers labeled Speaker A, Speaker B (not names), then a summary, decisions and action items you can email. It records live. It does not import existing audio or video files, so for a folder of old recordings, Whisper Notes does a job we can't.
On privacy: in cloud mode, audio goes to our transcription provider over an encrypted connection, is turned into text and thrown away. Recordings aren't kept and history stays on your device. Offline Mode on Apple silicon Macs runs transcription entirely on the Mac with no network. Intel Macs use the cloud, and so does the iPhone app. If you need everything on the device on an iPhone, Whisper Notes is built for that and we aren't. Our guide to offline voice to text on Mac goes into the Mac side.
Price: it's a subscription. On our website it's $4.99 a month (the monthly plan starts with a 3-day free trial), $34.99 a year or $1.99 a week. One plan covers Mac and iPhone, every plan has the same features, you can cancel any time and there's a 14-day refund. There's no free tier and no lifetime price. In-app prices on the App Store are different.

When Whisper Notes is the better pick
Stick with it, or choose it first, in these cases.
- You transcribe recordings: interviews, lectures, Voice Memos, audio or video files. We can't import files.
- Nothing may leave the device, including on iPhone. Its site says it never does.
- You'd rather pay once than subscribe. $7.99 or $14 once costs less up front and nothing recurring.
- You need more than 19 languages.
- You want Shortcuts actions, a command-line tool or an MCP server.
Choose Voice Keyboard Pro if you want to dictate into Messages, Mail, Slack and other iPhone apps from a keyboard; hold a key and talk on a Mac, including an Intel Mac; want live meeting notes with decisions and action items; or want one plan across both devices.
Frequently asked questions
Is Whisper Notes free?
Not entirely. Its iPhone and iPad app is $7.99 once on the App Store. The Mac app from its website is free for 5,000 words a week, or $14 once for unlimited use, per its site in October 2026.
Does Whisper Notes work on Mac?
Yes, on Apple silicon Macs (M1 or later, macOS 14 or later). Its site says Intel Macs aren't supported. The hold-Fn voice typing is in the Mac app from its website, not the Mac App Store build.
Does Whisper Notes need the internet?
No. Its site says transcription runs fully on the device with no internet needed, and models download inside the app on first use.
Can Voice Keyboard Pro transcribe an audio file like Whisper Notes?
No. It transcribes live speech and live meetings, but it doesn't import audio or video files, voice memos or podcasts. That's a clear point for Whisper Notes.
Can I use both?
Yes, and some people will. A pay-once transcriber for recordings and a keyboard for everyday dictation do different jobs. For a Mac-only comparison, see our MacWhisper comparison.
The bottom line
Whisper Notes turns recordings into text without anything leaving your device, and you pay for it once. If your day is mostly dictating into other apps, on an iPhone or on any Mac including Intel, or you want a meeting transcript that fills in live, Voice Keyboard Pro is built for that, at the cost of a subscription and a cloud connection outside Apple silicon Macs. If you do both kinds of work, the two can sit side by side.
One account covers the Mac app and the iPhone keyboard, and meeting notes arrive as a transcript with decisions and action items.
