Short answer: BetterDictation is the better pick if you have an Apple silicon Mac, want offline dictation, and prefer paying once. Voice Keyboard Pro is the alternative if you need Intel Mac support, an iPhone keyboard, cleanup included in the price, or meeting notes. BetterDictation's licences are listed at $39, $49 and $149 lifetime. Ours is a subscription.

Mac and iPhone Dictate into any app on your Mac or iPhone. Hold a key, speak, release. Download for MaciPhone

BetterDictation is a Mac dictation app that types what you say into whatever app has focus, runs on your Mac, and is sold as a one-time licence. If you're searching for a BetterDictation alternative, the usual reasons are an Intel Mac, a need for iPhone dictation, or wanting cleanup and meeting notes in the same app.

We make Voice Keyboard Pro, so we're not neutral. Every fact about BetterDictation below comes from betterdictation.com itself, checked in October 2026, and where its own pages disagree we say so. We also say when BetterDictation is the better pick, because for some people it plainly is.

What BetterDictation does well

Its home page describes it as macOS-only dictation that types into any app in over 100 languages, with a push-to-talk shortcut shown as Option and Space. Its FAQ describes two ways to use the shortcut: hold it to dictate and release to stop, or press once to start and again to stop for long dictations. It says base transcription runs on your Mac and works offline, so you can dictate with no network.

The pricing is the part many people come for. As listed on its home page in October 2026, under the heading "Pay once. Talk forever.", Basic is $39 /lifetime for one Mac, Flex is $49 /lifetime for three Macs, and Studio is $149 /lifetime for ten Macs, with Enterprise on request. The page says "No subscription for the app" and offers a 14-day money-back guarantee. For someone who just wants a Mac dictation tool and never wants another bill, that's a real advantage.

Its changelog shows features beyond plain dictation: custom vocabulary with an "Also heard as" field for words that keep coming out wrong, one list per preset (version 1.8.0), sending a dictation to your own script (version 1.7.1), and dragging audio files onto the menu bar icon to transcribe them (version 1.5.0). The changelog doesn't show release dates, so we can't tell you how recently each shipped.

Why people look for a BetterDictation alternative

These reasons follow from what its own site says, not from reviews.

1. It doesn't run on Intel Macs

The FAQ on its home page says BetterDictation "isn't supported on Intel Macs" and requires Apple silicon (M1 or newer), because it relies on the Apple Neural Engine. If you have an Intel Mac that still works fine, it's not an option. Its help page also mentions macOS Sonoma 14.4 or later when it lists reasons the app might not start.

2. It's Mac only

The home page says "Now on macOS" with Windows listed as coming, and "Exclusively on macOS" next to the shortcut. We found no iPhone app on its site. If you dictate messages and notes on your phone as much as you do emails on your Mac, you'd need something else for the phone.

3. Cleanup is a separate paid add-on

The base app transcribes and punctuates. Removing filler words, fixing grammar and formatting lists is its Pro add-on, listed at $2 a month billed annually, with the Flex and Studio licences including three free months. Its pages differ on whether Pro needs a connection: the home page FAQ says Pro features need internet access "for now", while the changelog for version 1.6.0 lists on-device cleanup that never leaves your Mac alongside cloud cleanup with your own API key. Either way, if you want cleanup every time, you're adding a subscription to a one-time purchase.

4. No meeting notes on its site

We found no meeting recording or summary feature described on betterdictation.com. Its job is dictating into other apps, and it does that. If you also want a transcript of a call with a summary and action items, you'd need a second tool.

None of this makes it a poor product. These are simply the places where its stated design stops, and they're the questions to ask before you pay.

What to look for in an alternative

Voice Keyboard Pro as an alternative

On the Mac, Voice Keyboard Pro is a menu bar app. You hold a key you choose (Left Control by default, or Left Shift, Left Command, Right Option or Fn), speak, and let go. The text is typed at your cursor in whatever app has focus. It listens only while you hold the key, and there's no hands-free or toggle mode on the Mac.

Smart Rewrite is included: it works out punctuation, tidies the text and matches the tone of the app you're in, while keeping your words. You can switch it off. There's also a personal vocabulary for names and jargon, spoken controls like "new line" and "delete that", and snippets for things like a saved signature. It works on both Apple silicon and Intel Macs, requires macOS 14 or later, and understands 19 languages with automatic detection. Offline Mode runs transcription entirely on the Mac, but only on Apple silicon. Intel Macs use the cloud.

It also records meetings: a call or a meeting in the room, with a live transcript, speakers labeled Speaker A and B, then a summary, decisions and action items. It records live. It doesn't import existing audio or video files, which BetterDictation's changelog says it can.

On iPhone, it's a full keyboard with a microphone built in. You tap Speak, talk, and tap Stop. It needs Allow Full Access, and because iOS doesn't let keyboards use the microphone directly, tapping Speak may briefly open the app. The iPhone keyboard doesn't work offline. One plan covers Mac and iPhone.

The trade-off is cost. On our website it's $4.99 a month (the monthly plan starts with a 3-day free trial), $34.99 a year (about $2.92 a month), or $1.99 a week. Every plan has the same features, you can cancel anytime, and there's a 14-day refund. In-app prices on the App Store are different. There's no one-time price.

If offline matters most and you want a one-time purchase, our own post on offline voice to text on Mac compares more options, and our roundup of Mac dictation apps names others honestly. Apple's built-in dictation is also an option if you want nothing to install.

When BetterDictation is the better pick

Stick with BetterDictation if you have an Apple silicon Mac, you only dictate on the Mac, and you want to pay once. Without Pro, the $39 licence costs less than our yearly plan from the second year on. It's also the better choice if you want offline dictation as the default, a toggle mode for long dictations, transcripts of audio files you already have, or many more languages than 19.

It also suits you if you're happy with plain transcription. You can skip Pro and never pay again. And if you like tuning how words come out, its custom vocabulary with an "Also heard as" field is a direct way to fix a word that keeps being misheard, with separate lists for each preset, as its changelog describes.

Frequently asked questions

Does BetterDictation work on iPhone?

We found no iPhone app on betterdictation.com in October 2026. Its home page describes it as exclusively on macOS. If you need iPhone dictation, see our guide to the best voice keyboards for iPhone.

What is the BetterDictation shortcut?

Its pages give two. The home page shows Option and Space for push-to-talk, while its help page, install page and the changelog for version 1.7.1 say to select a textbox and press and hold Control and V. The help page also lists Control, Shift and L for cycling presets. The site doesn't explain the difference, so check the shortcut in the app's settings after you install.

How much does BetterDictation cost?

As listed on its home page in October 2026: $39 for one Mac, $49 for three Macs, $149 for ten Macs, each shown as lifetime. The Pro add-on is $2 a month billed annually. Check betterdictation.com for current prices.

Does BetterDictation work offline?

Its site says base transcription runs entirely on your Mac and works offline. Its home page says Pro features need an internet connection for now, though its changelog also describes on-device cleanup.

Is there a BetterDictation alternative for Intel Macs?

Yes. BetterDictation says it isn't supported on Intel Macs. Voice Keyboard Pro runs on Intel Macs, though Offline Mode isn't available there and it uses the cloud. See also our guide to hold-to-speak dictation.

Can I try BetterDictation before buying?

Its home page offers a 14-day money-back guarantee, requested within 14 days of purchase, and says Pro is an optional add-on you can try free. We didn't find a free trial of the base app on its site, so check before you buy. Comparing it with other apps? We also have pages on Superwhisper alternatives and VoiceInk alternatives.

The bottom line

BetterDictation is a good deal if you're on Apple silicon, only dictate on the Mac and want to pay once, and it handles audio files and long toggle-mode dictation, which we don't. If you have an Intel Mac, want your iPhone covered, or want cleanup and meeting notes in one plan, Voice Keyboard Pro is the closer fit, at the cost of a subscription.
